Progress in Gender Pay Equity

Publishing our latest Gender Pay Gap Report we’re delighted to see measurable progress in gender pay equity with our ongoing commitment to fair pay, mutual respect, and inclusion reflected in both our statistics and our people-focused initiatives.

Oakland International has successfully reduced our mean hourly gender pay gap from 15% in the prior year to 14%, in the latest year while maintaining a steady median gap of 8%. We also saw more women represented in higher-paid roles, with women now making up 17% of the upper quartile and 31% of the upper middle quartile, compared to 14% and 26% respectively in the previous year. This positive shift demonstrates our dedication to supporting women’s advancement within the business.

The proportion of employees receiving a bonus also increased, rising from 61% to 63% in the latest year. Pay distribution moved in favour of women by 5% at the upper middle quartile and by 3% at the upper quartile, further highlighting the company’s progress in promoting gender equity. Additionally, just under 40% of employees received a discretionary payment during the relevant period, reflecting our commitment to recognising and rewarding our workforce.

Co-Founder Dean Attwell commented: “The UK’s gender pay gap is narrowing at an unacceptably slow pace, with current estimates indicating it could take more than 30 years to close. Eliminating this gap could boost UK GDP by up to 9.6% and generate over 10 million jobs. That’s just one compelling reason for business leaders to take decisive action, starting today.”

Oakland International’s progress is underpinned by a range of initiatives, including the launch of a driver apprenticeship program that encourages women to participate, the offering of flexible shift patterns where possible, and the publication of transparent career pathways. The company has also conducted company-wide succession reviews, championed mental health and neurodiversity, and equipped managers to coach, mentor, and lead authentically.

Shaun Foley, Group CEO, added that the Board’s wish to see more women in management and leadership roles is beginning to show movement in the split of pay at all levels, with technology playing a key role in upskilling the workforce and supporting this positive change.
